First the easy stuff...
The easiest way of saving money on your heating bill is to follow some basic conservation tips.  It's really quite simple: the more heat you are able to keep in your home, the less your furnace or boiler needs to produce and the less heating oil you will consume. For your convenience, we have posted some conservation tips for you to follow - Each year, you should make sure you brush up on these tips that will cost just a little and could save you big.
Spend a little more...
These strategies that will cost a bit more money but are still worth it.
Check Your Ducts - If you have a warm air furnace heat moves from your furnace to your rooms via ducts. If your ducts are poorly connected, not well insulated or not clean you can lose up to 60% of your heat before it gets to you. Check your ducts every year!
Winterize & Insulate - When it gets cold put up those storm windows and/or cover them with plastic. Make sure your windows and doors are not 'drafty' - if so try caulking the leak. And check your insulation each fall. Some well-placed insulation (especially in the attic) can save a bundle.
Spend a little time and money at a home improvement store - Buy a “smart” thermostat ($50-$100) that will automatically turn the temperature down at night and before work.

Buy a water-efficient showerhead (often less than $20) can help you use 25% to 50% less hot water, saving both on water and power bills.

Unless you’ve got a newer water heater that already has built-in insulation, buy an insulated “jacket” ($17-$20) to keep costs down, especially if your heater is in an unheated place like a garage.

Get Aggressive...
Consider upgrading your heating system to a new energy efficient furnace or boiler. Fact is oil heat technology is moving ahead fast and if you have an older heating system you may be spending more than you need to. Did you know:
A new modern system can reduce your heating oil consumption by up to 30%
A new energy efficient furnace usually pays for itself within 3-4 years.
Newer systems reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality for everyone.
